When Julian asks Bettina to move in together after only four months, she has to find the honest answer instead of the one she thinks he wants.
Julian asked Bettina to move in together on their four-month anniversary, over a dinner he had clearly planned around the question. She hadn't seen it coming, and the surprise on her face lasted long enough for him to understand her answer before she said a word.
"That's a big step," she finally said. "Can I think about it?"
"Of course," Julian said, though something in his voice suggested he had been hoping for a different response. "Take whatever time you need."
Bettina spent the next few days turning the question over. If she said yes, she thought, she would be agreeing to a pace that still felt faster than the one she actually wanted. If she said no, she risked making him feel like this mattered less to her than it did.
She called her sister that weekend, mostly to say the sentence out loud to someone who wasn't Julian. "I like him. I really do. I just don't know if I'm ready to build a whole life around someone I've only known for four months."
"Then tell him that," her sister said simply. "Not the version you think he wants to hear."
Bettina should have said something like that from the start, instead of letting Julian read her hesitation as a quiet no. When she finally sat down with him, she chose honesty over performance.
"I'm not saying no," she told him. "I'm saying not yet. If we moved in together right now, I think I'd feel like I was catching up to a decision instead of actually making one."
Julian was quiet for a moment, turning the sentence over the way she had turned over his question. "I think I asked too soon," he admitted. "I was excited, and excitement isn't the same as good timing."
"No," she agreed, "but it's not nothing, either."
They didn't move in together that spring. But they kept the conversation open between them, checking in every few weeks, until the timing belonged to both of them instead of just one.
