A new servant must learn a whole household of ridiculous private names for everyday things, then remember them all in an emergency.
A girl once went to the fair to hire herself for servant. At last a funny-looking old gentleman engaged her, and took her home to his house. When she got there, he told her that he had something to teach her, for that in his house he had his own names for things.
एक बार एक लड़की मेले में नौकरी के लिए खुद को किराए पर रखवाने गई। आखिरकार एक विचित्र दिखने वाले बूढ़े सज्जन ने उसे रख लिया, और उसे अपने घर ले गए। जब वह वहाँ पहुँची, तो उन्होंने उससे कहा कि उन्हें उसे कुछ सिखाना है, क्योंकि उनके घर में चीज़ों के अपने ही नाम हैं।
He said to her: “What will you call me?”
उन्होंने उससे कहा: "तुम मुझे क्या कहोगी?"
“Master or mister, or whatever you please sir,” says she.

He said: “You must call me 'master of all masters.' And what would you call this?” pointing to his bed.
उन्होंने कहा: "तुम्हें मुझे 'सब मालिकों के मालिक' कहना होगा। और इसे तुम क्या कहोगी?" उनके बिस्तर की ओर इशारा करते हुए।
“Bed or couch, or whatever you please, sir.”
"पलंग या खटिया, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“No, that's my 'barnacle.' And what do you call these?” said he pointing to his pantaloons.
"नहीं, यह मेरा 'सीपिया' है। और इन्हें तुम क्या कहती हो?" उन्होंने अपनी पतलून की ओर इशारा करते हुए कहा।
“Breeches or trousers, or whatever you please, sir.”
"पायजामा या पतलून, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“You must call them 'squibs and crackers.' And what would you call her?” pointing to the cat.
"तुम्हें इन्हें 'फुलझड़ी और पटाखे' कहना होगा। और उसे तुम क्या कहोगी?" बिल्ली की ओर इशारा करते हुए।
“Cat or kit, or whatever you please, sir.”
"बिल्ली या बिलौटी, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“You must call her 'white-faced simminy.' And this now,” showing the fire, “what would you call this?”
"तुम्हें उसे 'सफेद-मुँही सिमिनी' कहना होगा। और यह अब," आग दिखाते हुए, "इसे तुम क्या कहोगी?"
“Fire or flame, or whatever you please, sir.”
"आग या ज्वाला, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“You must call it 'hot cockalorum,' and what this?” he went on, pointing to the water.
"तुम्हें इसे 'गरम ककलोरम' कहना होगा, और यह?" उन्होंने आगे कहा, पानी की ओर इशारा करते हुए।
“Water or wet, or whatever you please, sir.”
"पानी या गीलापन, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“No, 'pondalorum' is its name. And what do you call all this?” asked he, as he pointed to the house.
"नहीं, इसका नाम 'पोंडालोरम' है। और इस सबको तुम क्या कहोगी?" उन्होंने पूछा, घर की ओर इशारा करते हुए।
“House or cottage, or whatever you please, sir.”
"घर या झोंपड़ी, या जो भी आपको पसंद हो, सर।"
“You must call it 'high topper mountain.'”
"तुम्हें इसे 'ऊँची चोटी वाला पहाड़' कहना होगा।"
That very night the servant woke her master up in a fright and said: “Master of all masters, get out of your barnacle and put on your squibs and crackers. For white-faced simminy has got a spark of hot cockalorum on its tail, and unless you get some pondalorum high topper mountain will be all on hot cockalorum.” … That's all.
उसी रात नौकरानी ने अपने मालिक को डर के मारे जगाया और कहा: "सब मालिकों के मालिक, अपनी सीपिया से बाहर निकलिए और अपनी फुलझड़ी और पटाखे पहनिए। क्योंकि सफेद-मुँही सिमिनी की पूँछ पर गरम ककलोरम की एक चिंगारी लग गई है, और अगर आपने कुछ पोंडालोरम न लिया, तो ऊँची चोटी वाला पहाड़ पूरा गरम ककलोरम में बदल जाएगा।" … बस इतना ही।
