Cap O' Rushes

Well, there was once a very rich gentleman, and he'd three daughters, and he thought he'd see how fond they were of him. So he says to the first, “How much do you love me, my dear?”

एक बार की बात है, एक बहुत धनी सज्जन थे, और उनकी तीन बेटियाँ थीं। उन्होंने सोचा कि देखें तो सही, बेटियाँ उन्हें कितना चाहती हैं। तो उन्होंने पहली से पूछा, “बेटी, तू मुझे कितना चाहती है?”

“Why,” says she, “as I love my life.”

“क्यों,” उसने कहा, “जितना मैं अपनी जान चाहती हूँ।”

“That's good,” says he.

“बहुत अच्छा,” उन्होंने कहा।

So he says to the second, “How much do you love me, my dear?”

फिर उन्होंने दूसरी से पूछा, “बेटी, तू मुझे कितना चाहती है?”

“Why,” says she, “better nor all the world.”

“क्यों,” उसने कहा, “सारी दुनिया से बढ़कर।”

“That's good,” says he.

“बहुत अच्छा,” उन्होंने कहा।

So he says to the third, “How much do you love me, my dear?”

फिर उन्होंने तीसरी से पूछा, “बेटी, तू मुझे कितना चाहती है?”

“Why, I love you as fresh meat loves salt,” says she.

“मैं आपको उतना ही चाहती हूँ जितना ताज़ा मांस नमक को चाहता है,” उसने कहा।

Well, he was that angry. “You don't love me at all,” says he, “and in my house you stay no more.” So he drove her out there and then, and shut the door in her face.

अरे, वे तो बहुत क्रोधित हो गए। “तू मुझे बिल्कुल नहीं चाहती,” उन्होंने कहा, “और अब मेरे घर में तेरा कोई ठिकाना नहीं।” सो उन्होंने उसे उसी पल घर से निकाल दिया, और उसके मुँह पर दरवाज़ा बंद कर दिया।

Well, she went away on and on till she came to a fen, and there she gathered a lot of rushes and made them into a kind of a sort of a cloak with a hood, to cover her from head to foot, and to hide her fine clothes. And then she went on and on till she came to a great house.

अच्छा, वह चलती-चलती एक दलदली मैदान तक पहुँची, और वहाँ उसने ढेर सारी सरकंडे की घास बटोरी और उनसे एक तरह का लबादा बना लिया, जिसमें एक टोपी भी लगी थी, जो उसे सिर से पाँव तक ढँक ले और उसके सुंदर कपड़े छिपा दे। फिर वह चलती-चलती एक बड़ी हवेली तक पहुँची।

“Do you want a maid?” says she.

“क्या आपको कोई नौकरानी चाहिए?” उसने पूछा।

“No, we don't,” said they.

“नहीं, हमें नहीं चाहिए,” उन्होंने कहा।

“I haven't nowhere to go,” says she; “and I ask no wages, and do any sort of work,” says she.

“मेरे पास जाने को कहीं नहीं है,” उसने कहा, “और मैं कोई मज़दूरी नहीं माँगती, और हर तरह का काम कर लूँगी,” उसने कहा।

“Well,” says they, “if you like to wash the pots and scrape the saucepans you may stay,” said they.

“अच्छा,” उन्होंने कहा, “अगर तू बर्तन धोए और कड़ाहियाँ माँजे तो तू रह सकती है,” उन्होंने कहा।

So she stayed there and washed the pots and scraped the saucepans and did all the dirty work. And because she gave no name they called her “Cap o' Rushes.”

सो वह वहीं रह गई और बर्तन धोती और कड़ाहियाँ माँजती और सारा गंदा काम करती रही। और चूँकि उसने अपना नाम नहीं बताया, इसलिए उन्होंने उसे “सरकंडे की टोपी वाली” कहकर बुलाना शुरू कर दिया।

Well, one day there was to be a great dance a little way off, and the servants were allowed to go and look on at the grand people. Cap o' Rushes said she was too tired to go, so she stayed at home.

अच्छा, एक दिन थोड़ी दूर एक बड़ा नाच-गाना होने वाला था, और नौकरों को इजाज़त थी कि जाकर बड़े लोगों को देखें। सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा कि वह बहुत थकी है, इसलिए वह घर पर ही रुक गई।

But when they were gone she offed with her cap o' rushes, and cleaned herself, and went to the dance. And no one there was so finely dressed as her.

पर जब वे चले गए तो उसने अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी उतार दी, और खुद को सजाया-सँवारा, और नाच में चली गई। और वहाँ कोई भी उतने सुंदर कपड़ों में नहीं था जितनी वह थी।

Well, who should be there but her master's son, and what should he do but fall in love with her the minute he set eyes on her. He wouldn't dance with any one else.

अच्छा, वहाँ कौन था, उसके मालिक का बेटा! और उसने क्या किया, उसे देखते ही उससे प्रेम कर बैठा। उसने और किसी के साथ नाचने से इनकार कर दिया।

But before the dance was done Cap o' Rushes slipt off, and away she went home. And when the other maids came back she was pretending to be asleep with her cap o' rushes on.

पर नाच खत्म होने से पहले सरकंडे की टोपी वाली चुपके से निकल गई, और घर चली गई। और जब बाकी नौकरानियाँ लौटीं तो वह अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी पहने सोने का बहाना कर रही थी।

Well, next morning they said to her, “You did miss a sight, Cap o' Rushes!”

अच्छा, अगली सुबह उन्होंने उससे कहा, “सरकंडे की टोपी वाली, तूने कितना बड़ा नज़ारा चूक दिया!”

“What was that?” says she.

“क्या था वह?” उसने पूछा।

“Why, the beautifullest lady you ever see, dressed right gay and ga'. The young master, he never took his eyes off her.”

“अरे, तूने कभी न देखी हो ऐसी सुंदर स्त्री, बड़े ठाट-बाट से सजी हुई। जवान मालिक तो उससे नज़रें ही नहीं हटा पा रहा था।”

“Well, I should have liked to have seen her,” says Cap o' Rushes.

“अच्छा, काश मैं भी उसे देख पाती,” सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा।

“Well, there's to be another dance this evening, and perhaps she'll be there.”

“अच्छा, आज शाम फिर एक नाच होगा, और शायद वह वहाँ फिर आए।”

But, come the evening, Cap o' Rushes said she was too tired to go with them. Howsoever, when they were gone, she offed with her cap o' rushes and cleaned herself, and away she went to the dance.

पर शाम होते ही सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा कि वह उनके साथ जाने के लिए बहुत थकी है। फिर भी, जब वे चले गए, तो उसने अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी उतार दी और खुद को सजाया-सँवारा, और नाच में चली गई।

The master's son had been reckoning on seeing her, and he danced with no one else, and never took his eyes off her. But, before the dance was over, she slipt off, and home she went, and when the maids came back she, pretended to be asleep with her cap o' rushes on.

मालिक का बेटा उसे फिर देखने की उम्मीद लगाए बैठा था, और उसने किसी और के साथ नहीं नाचा, और उससे नज़रें भी नहीं हटाईं। पर नाच खत्म होने से पहले वह चुपके से निकल गई, और घर चली गई, और जब नौकरानियाँ लौटीं तो वह अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी पहने सोने का बहाना कर रही थी।

Next day they said to her again, “Well, Cap o' Rushes, you should ha' been there to see the lady. There she was again, gay and ga', and the young master he never took his eyes off her.”

अगले दिन उन्होंने उससे फिर कहा, “अरे, सरकंडे की टोपी वाली, तुझे वहाँ होना चाहिए था उस स्त्री को देखने के लिए। वह फिर वहाँ थी, बड़े ठाट-बाट से सजी हुई, और जवान मालिक तो उससे नज़रें ही नहीं हटा पा रहा था।”

“Well, there,” says she, “I should ha' liked to ha' seen her.”

“अच्छा,” उसने कहा, “काश मैं भी उसे देख पाती।”

“Well,” says they, “there's a dance again this evening, and you must go with us, for she's sure to be there.”

“अच्छा,” उन्होंने कहा, “आज शाम फिर एक नाच होगा, और तुझे हमारे साथ चलना ही होगा, क्योंकि वह ज़रूर वहाँ आएगी।”

Well, come this evening, Cap o' Rushes said she was too tired to go, and do what they would she stayed at home. But when they were gone she offed with her cap o' rushes and cleaned herself, and away she went to the dance.

अच्छा, शाम होते ही सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा कि वह बहुत थकी है, और उन्होंने कितना भी कहा वह घर पर ही रुक गई। पर जब वे चले गए तो उसने अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी उतार दी और खुद को सजाया-सँवारा, और नाच में चली गई।

The master's son was rarely glad when he saw her. He danced with none but her and never took his eyes off her. When she wouldn't tell him her name, nor where she came from, he gave her a ring and told her if he didn't see her again he should die.

मालिक का बेटा उसे देखकर बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने उसके सिवा किसी और के साथ नहीं नाचा और उससे नज़रें भी नहीं हटाईं। जब उसने उसे अपना नाम नहीं बताया, न यह बताया कि वह कहाँ से आई है, तो उसने उसे एक अँगूठी दी और कहा कि अगर उसने उसे फिर न देखा तो वह मर जाएगा।

Well, before the dance was over, off she slipped, and home she went, and when the maids came home she was pretending to be asleep with her cap o' rushes on.

अच्छा, नाच खत्म होने से पहले, वह चुपके से निकल गई, और घर चली गई, और जब नौकरानियाँ लौटीं तो वह अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी पहने सोने का बहाना कर रही थी।

Well, next day they says to her, “There, Cap o' Rushes, you didn't come last night, and now you won't see the lady, for there's no more dances.”

अच्छा, अगले दिन उन्होंने उससे कहा, “अरे, सरकंडे की टोपी वाली, तू कल रात नहीं आई, और अब तू उस स्त्री को नहीं देख पाएगी, क्योंकि अब और नाच नहीं होंगे।”

“Well I should have rarely liked to have seen her,” says she.

“अच्छा, काश मैं भी उसे ज़रूर देख पाती,” उसने कहा।

The master's son he tried every way to find out where the lady was gone, but go where he might, and ask whom he might, he never heard anything about her. And he got worse and worse for the love of her till he had to keep his bed.

मालिक का बेटा हर तरह से यह पता लगाने की कोशिश करता रहा कि वह स्त्री कहाँ गई, पर वह जहाँ भी गया, जिससे भी पूछा, उसे उसके बारे में कुछ भी पता न चला। और उसके प्रेम में वह इतना बीमार पड़ता गया कि आखिरकार उसे बिस्तर पकड़ना पड़ा।

“Make some gruel for the young master,” they said to the cook. “He's dying for the love of the lady.” The cook she set about making it when Cap o' Rushes came in.

“जवान मालिक के लिए थोड़ा दलिया बनाओ,” उन्होंने रसोइए से कहा। “वह उस स्त्री के प्रेम में मरा जा रहा है।” रसोइया दलिया बनाने ही वाली थी कि सरकंडे की टोपी वाली अंदर आई।

“What are you a-doing of?”, says she.

“तुम क्या कर रही हो?” उसने पूछा।

“I'm going to make some gruel for the young master,” says the cook, “for he's dying for love of the lady.”

“मैं जवान मालिक के लिए थोड़ा दलिया बना रही हूँ,” रसोइए ने कहा, “क्योंकि वह उस स्त्री के प्रेम में मरा जा रहा है।”

“Let me make it,” says Cap o' Rushes.

“मुझे बनाने दो,” सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा।

Well, the cook wouldn't at first, but at last she said yes, and Cap o' Rushes made the gruel. And when she had made it she slipped the ring into it on the sly before the cook took it upstairs.

अच्छा, रसोइया पहले तो राज़ी न हुई, पर आखिरकार उसने हाँ कह दिया, और सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने दलिया बनाया। और जब वह बना चुकी तो रसोइए के ऊपर ले जाने से पहले उसने चुपके से उस अँगूठी को उसमें डाल दिया।

The young man he drank it and then he saw the ring at the bottom.

जवान आदमी ने वह दलिया पिया और फिर उसे तले में वह अँगूठी दिखी।

“Send for the cook,” says he.

“रसोइए को बुलाओ,” उसने कहा।

So up she comes.

सो वह ऊपर आई।

“Who made this gruel here?” says he.

“यह दलिया किसने बनाया?” उसने पूछा।

“I did,” says the cook, for she was frightened.

“मैंने बनाया,” रसोइए ने कहा, क्योंकि वह डर गई थी।

And he looked at her,

और उसने उसकी ओर देखा,

“No, you didn't,” says he. “Say who did it, and you shan't be harmed.”

“नहीं, तुमने नहीं बनाया,” उसने कहा। “सच बताओ किसने बनाया, और तुम्हें कोई नुकसान नहीं होगा।”

“Well, then, 'twas Cap o' Rushes,” says she.

“अच्छा, तो यह सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने बनाया था,” उसने कहा।

“Send Cap o' Rushes here,” says he.

“सरकंडे की टोपी वाली को यहाँ भेजो,” उसने कहा।

So Cap o' Rushes came.

सो सरकंडे की टोपी वाली आई।

“Did you make my gruel?” says he.

“क्या तुमने मेरा दलिया बनाया?” उसने पूछा।

“Yes, I did,” says she.

“हाँ, मैंने बनाया,” उसने कहा।

“Where did you get this ring?” says he.

“यह अँगूठी तुम्हें कहाँ से मिली?” उसने पूछा।

“From him that gave it me,” says she.

“उससे जिसने मुझे यह दी थी,” उसने कहा।

“Who are you, then?” says the young man.

“तो तुम कौन हो?” जवान आदमी ने पूछा।

“I'll show you,” says she. And she offed with her cap o' rushes, and there she was in her beautiful clothes.

“मैं तुम्हें दिखाती हूँ,” उसने कहा। और उसने अपनी सरकंडे की टोपी उतार दी, और वहाँ वह अपने सुंदर कपड़ों में खड़ी थी।

Well, the master's son he got well very soon, and they were to be married in a little time. It was to be a very grand wedding, and every one was asked far and near. And Cap o' Rushes' father was asked. But she never told anybody who she was.

अच्छा, मालिक का बेटा जल्दी ही ठीक हो गया, और उनकी शादी थोड़े ही समय में होनी थी। यह एक बहुत भव्य विवाह होना था, और दूर-दूर तक सबको बुलाया गया। और सरकंडे की टोपी वाली के पिता को भी बुलाया गया। पर उसने किसी को नहीं बताया कि वह कौन है।

But before the wedding she went to the cook, and says she:

पर शादी से पहले वह रसोइए के पास गई, और बोली:

“I want you to dress every dish without a mite o' salt.”

“मैं चाहती हूँ कि तुम हर पकवान बिना नमक की एक चुटकी के भी पकाओ।”

“That'll be rare nasty,” says the cook.

“यह बहुत बेस्वाद होगा,” रसोइए ने कहा।

“That doesn't signify,” says she.

“इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता,” उसने कहा।

“Very well,” says the cook.

“बहुत अच्छा,” रसोइए ने कहा।

Well, the wedding-day came, and they were married. And after they were married all the company sat down to the dinner. When they began to eat the meat, that was so tasteless they couldn't eat it. But Cap o' Rushes' father he tried first one dish and then another, and then he burst out crying.

अच्छा, शादी का दिन आ गया, और उनकी शादी हो गई। और शादी के बाद सब लोग दावत में बैठे। जब उन्होंने मांस खाना शुरू किया, तो वह इतना बेस्वाद था कि वे उसे खा ही न सके। पर सरकंडे की टोपी वाली के पिता ने पहले एक पकवान चखा फिर दूसरा, और फिर वे फूट-फूट कर रो पड़े।

“What is the matter?” said the master's son to him.

“क्या बात है?” मालिक के बेटे ने उनसे पूछा।

“Oh!” says he, “I had a daughter. And I asked her how much she loved me. And she said 'As much as fresh meat loves salt.' And I turned her from my door, for I thought she didn't love me. And now I see she loved me best of all. And she may be dead for aught I know.”

“ओह!” उन्होंने कहा, “मेरी एक बेटी थी। और मैंने उससे पूछा था कि वह मुझे कितना चाहती है। और उसने कहा था, 'जितना ताज़ा मांस नमक को चाहता है।' और मैंने उसे अपने घर से निकाल दिया, क्योंकि मैंने सोचा था कि वह मुझे नहीं चाहती। और अब मुझे पता चला कि वह मुझे सबसे ज़्यादा चाहती थी। और पता नहीं वह अब जीवित भी है या नहीं।”

“No, father, here she is!” says Cap o' Rushes. And she goes up to him and puts her arms round him.

“नहीं, पिताजी, यह रही मैं!” सरकंडे की टोपी वाली ने कहा। और वह उनके पास गई और अपनी बाँहें उनके गले लगा दीं।

And so they were happy ever after.

और इस तरह वे हमेशा-हमेशा के लिए सुखी रहे।
