Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree

Once upon a time there was a king who had a wife, whose name was Silver-tree, and a daughter, whose name was Gold-tree. On a certain day of the days, Gold-tree and Silver-tree went to a glen, where there was a well, and in it there was a trout.

Era uma vez um rei que tinha uma esposa, cujo nome era Árvore-de-Prata, e uma filha, cujo nome era Árvore-de-Ouro. Certo dia entre os dias, Árvore-de-Ouro e Árvore-de-Prata foram a um vale, onde havia um poço, e nele havia uma truta.

Said Silver-tree, "Troutie, bonny little fellow, am not I the most beautiful queen in the world?"

Disse Árvore-de-Prata: — Trutinha, belo amiguinho, não sou eu a rainha mais bela do mundo?

"Oh! indeed you are not."

— Ah! De fato, não é.

"Who then?"

— Quem então?

"Why, Gold-tree, your daughter."

— Ora, Árvore-de-Ouro, sua filha.

Silver-tree went home, blind with rage. She lay down on the bed, and vowed she would never be well until she could get the heart and the liver of Gold-tree, her daughter, to eat.

Árvore-de-Prata foi para casa, cega de raiva. Deitou-se na cama, e jurou que nunca mais ficaria bem até conseguir comer o coração e o fígado de Árvore-de-Ouro, sua filha.

At nightfall the king came home, and it was told him that Silver-tree, his wife, was very ill. He went where she was, and asked her what was wrong with her.

Ao anoitecer, o rei voltou para casa, e lhe disseram que Árvore-de-Prata, sua esposa, estava muito doente. Ele foi até onde ela estava, e perguntou o que havia de errado com ela.

"Oh! only a thing—which you may heal if you like."

— Ah! Só uma coisa — que o senhor pode curar, se quiser.

"Oh! indeed there is nothing at all which I could do for you that I would not do."

— Ah! De fato, não há nada que eu pudesse fazer por ti que eu não faria.

"If I get the heart and the liver of Gold-tree, my daughter, to eat, I shall be well."

— Se eu conseguir comer o coração e o fígado de Árvore-de-Ouro, minha filha, ficarei bem.

Now it happened about this time that the son of a great king had come from abroad to ask Gold-tree for marrying. The king now agreed to this, and they went abroad.

Ora, aconteceu que, por essa época, o filho de um grande rei tinha vindo do exterior para pedir Árvore-de-Ouro em casamento. O rei agora concordou com isso, e eles foram para o exterior.

The king then went and sent his lads to the hunting-hill for a he-goat, and he gave its heart and its liver to his wife to eat; and she rose well and healthy.

O rei então foi e mandou seus rapazes ao morro de caça buscar um bode, e deu seu coração e seu fígado à esposa para comer; e ela se levantou boa e saudável.

A year after this Silver-tree went to the glen, where there was the well in which there was the trout.

Um ano depois disso, Árvore-de-Prata foi ao vale, onde havia o poço no qual estava a truta.

"Troutie, bonny little fellow," said she, "am not I the most beautiful queen in the world?"

— Trutinha, belo amiguinho — disse ela —, não sou eu a rainha mais bela do mundo?

"Oh! indeed you are not."

— Ah! De fato, não é.

"Who then?"

— Quem então?

"Why, Gold-tree, your daughter."

— Ora, Árvore-de-Ouro, sua filha.

"Oh! well, it is long since she was living. It is a year since I ate her heart and liver."

— Ah! Bem, faz muito tempo que ela não vive mais. Faz um ano que comi seu coração e seu fígado.

"Oh! indeed she is not dead. She is married to a great prince abroad."

— Ah! De fato, ela não está morta. Está casada com um grande príncipe no exterior.

Silver-tree went home, and begged the king to put the long-ship in order, and said, "I am going to see my dear Gold-tree, for it is so long since I saw her." The long-ship was put in order, and they went away.

Árvore-de-Prata foi para casa, e implorou ao rei que mandasse preparar o navio longo, e disse: — Vou ver minha querida Árvore-de-Ouro, pois faz tanto tempo que não a vejo. — O navio longo foi preparado, e eles partiram.

It was Silver-tree herself that was at the helm, and she steered the ship so well that they were not long at all before they arrived.

Foi a própria Árvore-de-Prata quem ficou no leme, e ela conduziu o navio tão bem que não demoraram nada para chegar.

The prince was out hunting on the hills. Gold-tree knew the long-ship of her father coming.

O príncipe estava caçando nas colinas. Árvore-de-Ouro reconheceu o navio longo de seu pai chegando.

"Oh!" said she to the servants, "my mother is coming, and she will kill me."

— Ah! — disse ela às servas —, minha mãe está chegando, e ela vai me matar.

"She shall not kill you at all; we will lock you in a room where she cannot get near you."

— Ela não vai te matar de jeito nenhum; vamos te trancar num quarto onde ela não possa chegar perto de ti.

This is how it was done; and when Silver-tree came ashore, she began to cry out:

Foi assim que se fez; e quando Árvore-de-Prata chegou à praia, começou a gritar:

"Come to meet your own mother, when she comes to see you," Gold-tree said that she could not, that she was locked in the room, and that she could not get out of it.

— Venha encontrar sua própria mãe, quando ela vem te ver! — Árvore-de-Ouro disse que não podia, que estava trancada no quarto, e que não conseguia sair dele.

"Will you not put out," said Silver-tree, "your little finger through the key-hole, so that your own mother may give a kiss to it?"

— Você não vai colocar para fora — disse Árvore-de-Prata — o seu dedo mindinho pelo buraco da fechadura, para que sua própria mãe possa dar um beijo nele?

She put out her little finger, and Silver-tree went and put a poisoned stab in it, and Gold-tree fell dead.

Ela colocou o dedo mindinho para fora, e Árvore-de-Prata foi e cravou nele uma agulha envenenada, e Árvore-de-Ouro caiu morta.

When the prince came home, and found Gold-tree dead, he was in great sorrow, and when he saw how beautiful she was, he did not bury her at all, but he locked her in a room where nobody would get near her.

Quando o príncipe voltou para casa, e encontrou Árvore-de-Ouro morta, ficou em grande tristeza, e quando viu como ela era bela, não a enterrou de jeito nenhum, mas a trancou num quarto onde ninguém pudesse chegar perto dela.

In the course of time he married again, and the whole house was under the hand of this wife but one room, and he himself always kept the key of that room. On a certain day of the days he forgot to take the key with him, and the second wife got into the room. What did she see there but the most beautiful woman that she ever saw.

Com o passar do tempo, ele se casou de novo, e a casa inteira ficou sob o comando dessa esposa, exceto um quarto, e ele mesmo sempre guardava a chave daquele quarto. Certo dia entre os dias, ele esqueceu de levar a chave consigo, e a segunda esposa entrou no quarto. O que ela viu ali senão a mulher mais bela que já tinha visto na vida.

She began to turn and try to wake her, and she noticed the poisoned stab in her finger. She took the stab out, and Gold-tree rose alive, as beautiful as she was ever.

Ela começou a virá-la e tentar acordá-la, e notou a agulha envenenada no dedo dela. Tirou a agulha, e Árvore-de-Ouro se levantou viva, tão bela quanto sempre tinha sido.

At the fall of night the prince came home from the hunting-hill, looking very downcast.

Ao cair da noite, o príncipe voltou para casa do morro de caça, parecendo muito abatido.

"What gift," said his wife, "would you give me that I could make you laugh?"

— Que presente — disse sua esposa — eu poderia lhe dar que o fizesse rir?

"Oh! indeed, nothing could make me laugh, except Gold-tree were to come alive again."

— Ah! De fato, nada poderia me fazer rir, a não ser que Árvore-de-Ouro voltasse a viver.

"Well, you'll find her alive down there in the room."

— Bem, o senhor vai encontrá-la viva ali no quarto.

When the prince saw Gold-tree alive he made great rejoicings, and he began to kiss her, and kiss her, and kiss her. Said the second wife, "Since she is the first one you had it is better for you to stick to her, and I will go away."

Quando o príncipe viu Árvore-de-Ouro viva, fez grandes festejos, e começou a beijá-la, e beijá-la, e beijá-la. Disse a segunda esposa: — Já que ela foi a primeira que o senhor teve, é melhor que fique com ela, e eu irei embora.

"Oh! indeed you shall not go away, but I shall have both of you."

— Ah! De fato, você não vai embora de jeito nenhum, mas eu ficarei com vocês duas.

At the end of the year, Silver-tree went to the glen, where there was the well, in which there was the trout.

No fim do ano, Árvore-de-Prata foi ao vale, onde havia o poço no qual estava a truta.

"Troutie, bonny little fellow," said she, "am not I the most beautiful queen in the world?"

Silver-tree, went home, and begged the king to put the long-ship in order, for that she was going to see her dear Gold-tree, as it was so long since she saw her. The long-ship was put in order, and they went away. It was Silver-tree herself that was at the helm, and she steered the ship so well that they were not long at all before they arrived.

Árvore-de-Prata foi para casa, e implorou ao rei que mandasse preparar o navio longo, pois ia ver sua querida Árvore-de-Ouro, já que fazia tanto tempo que não a via. O navio longo foi preparado, e eles partiram. Foi a própria Árvore-de-Prata quem ficou no leme, e ela conduziu o navio tão bem que não demoraram nada para chegar.

The prince was out hunting on the hills. Gold-tree knew her father's ship coming.

O príncipe estava caçando nas colinas. Árvore-de-Ouro reconheceu o navio de seu pai chegando.

"Oh!" said she, "my mother is coming, and she will kill me."

— Ah! — disse ela —, minha mãe está chegando, e ela vai me matar.

"Not at all," said the second wife; "we will go down to meet her."

— De jeito nenhum — disse a segunda esposa —; vamos descer para recebê-la.

Silver-tree came ashore. "Come down, Gold-tree, love," said she, "for your own mother has come to you with a precious drink."

Árvore-de-Prata desembarcou. — Desça, Árvore-de-Ouro, minha querida — disse ela —, pois sua própria mãe veio até você com uma bebida preciosa.

"It is a custom in this country," said the second wife, "that the person who offers a drink takes a draught out of it first."

— É costume neste país — disse a segunda esposa — que a pessoa que oferece uma bebida tome primeiro um gole dela.

Silver-tree put her mouth to it, and the second wife went and struck it so that some of it went down her throat, and she fell dead. They had only to carry her home a dead corpse and bury her.

Árvore-de-Prata levou a bebida à boca, e a segunda esposa foi e a golpeou de modo que um pouco dela descesse por sua garganta, e ela caiu morta. Só lhes restou levá-la para casa como um cadáver e enterrá-la.

The prince and his two wives were long alive after this, pleased and peaceful.

O príncipe e suas duas esposas viveram muito tempo depois disso, contentes e em paz.
