Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree

A vain queen flies into a jealous rage when a magic trout calls her daughter the fairest of all — and will stop at nothing, not even murder, to reclaim the title.
Once upon a time there was a king who had a wife, whose name was Silver-tree, and a daughter, whose name was Gold-tree. On a certain day of the days, Gold-tree and Silver-tree went to a glen, where there was a well, and in it there was a trout.
Había una vez un rey que tenía una esposa, cuyo nombre era Árbol de Plata, y una hija, cuyo nombre era Árbol de Oro. Cierto día de los días, Árbol de Oro y Árbol de Plata fueron a un valle, donde había un pozo, y en él había una trucha.
Said Silver-tree, "Troutie, bonny little fellow, am not I the most beautiful queen in the world?"
Dijo Árbol de Plata: «Truchita, hermoso pececillo, ¿no soy yo la reina más hermosa del mundo?».
"Oh! indeed you are not."
«¡Ay! Pues no lo sois».
"Who then?"
«¿Quién entonces?».
"Why, Gold-tree, your daughter."

Silver-tree went home, blind with rage. She lay down on the bed, and vowed she would never be well until she could get the heart and the liver of Gold-tree, her daughter, to eat.
Árbol de Plata volvió a casa, ciega de rabia. Se echó en la cama, y juró que nunca se sentiría bien hasta que consiguiera el corazón y el hígado de Árbol de Oro, su hija, para comerlos.
At nightfall the king came home, and it was told him that Silver-tree, his wife, was very ill. He went where she was, and asked her what was wrong with her.
Al caer la noche llegó el rey a casa, y le dijeron que Árbol de Plata, su esposa, estaba muy enferma. Fue adonde ella estaba, y le preguntó qué le pasaba.
"Oh! only a thing—which you may heal if you like."
«¡Ay! Solo una cosa —que podríais curar si quisierais».
"Oh! indeed there is nothing at all which I could do for you that I would not do."
«¡Ay! Ciertamente no hay nada que yo pudiera hacer por vos que no hiciera».
"If I get the heart and the liver of Gold-tree, my daughter, to eat, I shall be well."
«Si consigo el corazón y el hígado de Árbol de Oro, mi hija, para comerlos, me pondré bien».
Now it happened about this time that the son of a great king had come from abroad to ask Gold-tree for marrying. The king now agreed to this, and they went abroad.
Sucedió por entonces que el hijo de un gran rey había venido del extranjero a pedir la mano de Árbol de Oro para casarse. El rey aceptó, y se marcharon al extranjero.
The king then went and sent his lads to the hunting-hill for a he-goat, and he gave its heart and its liver to his wife to eat; and she rose well and healthy.
El rey entonces fue y envió a sus mozos a la colina de caza por un macho cabrío, y le dio su corazón y su hígado a su esposa para comer; y ella se levantó sana y buena.
A year after this Silver-tree went to the glen, where there was the well in which there was the trout.
Un año después de esto, Árbol de Plata fue al valle, donde estaba el pozo en el que había la trucha.
"Troutie, bonny little fellow," said she, "am not I the most beautiful queen in the world?"
«Truchita, hermoso pececillo», dijo ella, «¿no soy yo la reina más hermosa del mundo?».
"Oh! indeed you are not."
«¡Ay! Pues no lo sois».
"Who then?"
«¿Quién entonces?».
"Why, Gold-tree, your daughter."

"Oh! well, it is long since she was living. It is a year since I ate her heart and liver."
«¡Ay! Bueno, hace ya tiempo que no vive. Hace un año que comí su corazón y su hígado».
"Oh! indeed she is not dead. She is married to a great prince abroad."
«¡Ay! Pues ella no está muerta en absoluto. Está casada con un gran príncipe en el extranjero».
Silver-tree went home, and begged the king to put the long-ship in order, and said, "I am going to see my dear Gold-tree, for it is so long since I saw her." The long-ship was put in order, and they went away.
Árbol de Plata volvió a casa, y le rogó al rey que preparara la nave larga, y dijo: «Voy a ver a mi querida Árbol de Oro, pues hace tanto tiempo que no la veo». Se preparó la nave larga, y partieron.
It was Silver-tree herself that was at the helm, and she steered the ship so well that they were not long at all before they arrived.
Fue la propia Árbol de Plata quien estuvo al timón, y dirigió la nave tan bien que no tardaron nada en llegar.
The prince was out hunting on the hills. Gold-tree knew the long-ship of her father coming.
El príncipe estaba de caza en las colinas. Árbol de Oro reconoció la nave larga de su padre que se acercaba.
"Oh!" said she to the servants, "my mother is coming, and she will kill me."
«¡Ay!», dijo ella a los criados, «mi madre viene, y me matará».
"She shall not kill you at all; we will lock you in a room where she cannot get near you."
«No os matará en absoluto; os encerraremos en una habitación donde no pueda acercarse a vos».
This is how it was done; and when Silver-tree came ashore, she began to cry out:
Así se hizo; y cuando Árbol de Plata llegó a tierra, empezó a gritar:
"Come to meet your own mother, when she comes to see you," Gold-tree said that she could not, that she was locked in the room, and that she could not get out of it.
«Ven a recibir a tu propia madre, cuando viene a verte», Árbol de Oro dijo que no podía, que estaba encerrada en la habitación, y que no podía salir de ella.
"Will you not put out," said Silver-tree, "your little finger through the key-hole, so that your own mother may give a kiss to it?"
«¿No sacarás», dijo Árbol de Plata, «tu dedo meñique por el ojo de la cerradura, para que tu propia madre pueda darle un beso?».
She put out her little finger, and Silver-tree went and put a poisoned stab in it, and Gold-tree fell dead.
Ella sacó su dedo meñique, y Árbol de Plata fue y le clavó una púa envenenada en él, y Árbol de Oro cayó muerta.
When the prince came home, and found Gold-tree dead, he was in great sorrow, and when he saw how beautiful she was, he did not bury her at all, but he locked her in a room where nobody would get near her.
Cuando el príncipe volvió a casa, y encontró muerta a Árbol de Oro, sintió una gran pena, y al ver lo hermosa que era, no la enterró en absoluto, sino que la encerró en una habitación donde nadie pudiera acercarse a ella.
In the course of time he married again, and the whole house was under the hand of this wife but one room, and he himself always kept the key of that room. On a certain day of the days he forgot to take the key with him, and the second wife got into the room. What did she see there but the most beautiful woman that she ever saw.
Con el tiempo, se casó de nuevo, y toda la casa quedó bajo la mano de esta esposa, salvo una habitación, cuya llave él mismo guardaba siempre. Cierto día de los días olvidó llevarse la llave consigo, y la segunda esposa entró en la habitación. ¿Qué vio allí sino a la mujer más hermosa que jamás había visto?
She began to turn and try to wake her, and she noticed the poisoned stab in her finger. She took the stab out, and Gold-tree rose alive, as beautiful as she was ever.
Empezó a moverla y a intentar despertarla, y notó la púa envenenada en su dedo. Sacó la púa, y Árbol de Oro se levantó viva, tan hermosa como siempre.
At the fall of night the prince came home from the hunting-hill, looking very downcast.
Al caer la noche, el príncipe volvió a casa de la colina de caza, con aspecto muy abatido.
"What gift," said his wife, "would you give me that I could make you laugh?"
«¿Qué regalo», dijo su esposa, «me daríais si os hiciera reír?».
"Oh! indeed, nothing could make me laugh, except Gold-tree were to come alive again."
«¡Ay! Ciertamente, nada podría hacerme reír, salvo que Árbol de Oro volviera a la vida».
"Well, you'll find her alive down there in the room."
«Pues bien, la encontraréis viva allá abajo en la habitación».
When the prince saw Gold-tree alive he made great rejoicings, and he began to kiss her, and kiss her, and kiss her. Said the second wife, "Since she is the first one you had it is better for you to stick to her, and I will go away."
Cuando el príncipe vio viva a Árbol de Oro, hizo grandes festejos, y se puso a besarla, y a besarla, y a besarla. Dijo la segunda esposa: «Ya que ella fue la primera que tuvisteis, es mejor que os quedéis con ella, y yo me marcharé».
"Oh! indeed you shall not go away, but I shall have both of you."

At the end of the year, Silver-tree went to the glen, where there was the well, in which there was the trout.

"Oh! well, she is not alive. It is a year since I put the poisoned stab into her finger."
«¡Ay! Bueno, ella no está viva. Hace un año que le clavé la púa envenenada en el dedo».
"Oh! indeed she is not dead at all, at all."
«¡Ay! Pues ella no está muerta en absoluto, en absoluto».
Silver-tree, went home, and begged the king to put the long-ship in order, for that she was going to see her dear Gold-tree, as it was so long since she saw her. The long-ship was put in order, and they went away. It was Silver-tree herself that was at the helm, and she steered the ship so well that they were not long at all before they arrived.
Árbol de Plata volvió a casa, y le rogó al rey que preparara la nave larga, pues iba a ver a su querida Árbol de Oro, ya que hacía tanto tiempo que no la veía. Se preparó la nave larga, y partieron. Fue la propia Árbol de Plata quien estuvo al timón, y dirigió la nave tan bien que no tardaron nada en llegar.
The prince was out hunting on the hills. Gold-tree knew her father's ship coming.
El príncipe estaba de caza en las colinas. Árbol de Oro reconoció la nave de su padre que se acercaba.
"Oh!" said she, "my mother is coming, and she will kill me."
«¡Ay!», dijo ella, «mi madre viene, y me matará».
"Not at all," said the second wife; "we will go down to meet her."
«En absoluto», dijo la segunda esposa; «iremos a recibirla».
Silver-tree came ashore. "Come down, Gold-tree, love," said she, "for your own mother has come to you with a precious drink."
Árbol de Plata llegó a tierra. «Baja, Árbol de Oro, amor mío», dijo ella, «pues tu propia madre ha venido a ti con una bebida preciosa».
"It is a custom in this country," said the second wife, "that the person who offers a drink takes a draught out of it first."
«Es costumbre en este país», dijo la segunda esposa, «que la persona que ofrece una bebida tome primero un trago de ella».
Silver-tree put her mouth to it, and the second wife went and struck it so that some of it went down her throat, and she fell dead. They had only to carry her home a dead corpse and bury her.
Árbol de Plata acercó la boca a la bebida, y la segunda esposa fue y la golpeó de modo que parte de ella le bajó por la garganta, y cayó muerta. No tuvieron más que llevarla a casa como un cadáver y enterrarla.
The prince and his two wives were long alive after this, pleased and peaceful.
El príncipe y sus dos esposas vivieron mucho tiempo después de esto, felices y en paz.
