The Well of the World's End

Once upon a time, and a very good time it was, though it wasn't in my time, nor in your time, nor any one else's time, there was a girl whose mother had died, and her father had married again. And her stepmother hated her because she was more beautiful than herself, and she was very cruel to her. She used to make her do all the servant's work, and never let her have any peace.

Era uma vez, e foi um tempo muito bom, embora não fosse no meu tempo, nem no seu tempo, nem no tempo de mais ninguém, havia uma menina cuja mãe tinha morrido, e seu pai tinha se casado de novo. E sua madrasta a odiava porque ela era mais bonita do que ela mesma, e era muito cruel com ela. Costumava fazê-la fazer todo o trabalho de empregada, e nunca a deixava ter nenhum sossego.

At last, one day, the stepmother thought to get rid of her altogether; so she handed her a sieve and said to her: “Go, fill it at the Well of the World's End and bring it home to me full, or woe betide you.” For she thought she would never be able to find the Well of the World's End, and, if she did, how could she bring home a sieve full of water?

Por fim, um dia, a madrasta pensou em se livrar dela de vez; então lhe entregou uma peneira e disse: — Vá, encha-a no Poço do Fim do Mundo e a traga para casa cheia, ou pobre de você. — Pois ela achava que a menina nunca conseguiria encontrar o Poço do Fim do Mundo, e, se conseguisse, como poderia trazer para casa uma peneira cheia d'água?

Well, the girl started off, and asked every one she met to tell her where was the Well of the World's End. But nobody knew, and she didn't know what to do, when a queer little old woman, all bent double, told her where it was, and how she could get to it. So she did what the old woman told her, and at last arrived at the Well of the World's End. But when she dipped the sieve in the cold, cold water, it all ran out again. She tried and she tried again, but every time it was the same; and at last she sate down and cried as if her heart would break.

Bem, a menina partiu, e perguntou a todos que encontrava onde ficava o Poço do Fim do Mundo. Mas ninguém sabia, e ela não sabia o que fazer, quando uma estranha velhinha, toda curvada ao meio, lhe disse onde ficava, e como poderia chegar até lá. Então ela fez o que a velha lhe disse, e por fim chegou ao Poço do Fim do Mundo. Mas quando mergulhou a peneira na água fria, fria, toda ela escorreu de volta. Ela tentou, e tentou de novo, mas toda vez era a mesma coisa; e por fim se sentou e chorou como se seu coração fosse se partir.

Suddenly she heard a croaking voice, and she looked up and saw a great frog with goggle eyes looking at her and speaking to her.

De repente ela ouviu uma voz coaxante, e olhou para cima e viu um grande sapo com olhos esbugalhados olhando para ela e falando com ela.

“What's the matter, dearie?” it said.

— Qual é o problema, querida? — ele disse.

“Oh, dear, oh dear,” she said, “my stepmother has sent me all this long way to fill this sieve with water from the Well of the World's End, and I can't fill it no how at all.”

— Ai, meu Deus, ai, meu Deus — ela disse —, minha madrasta me mandou até tão longe para encher esta peneira com água do Poço do Fim do Mundo, e eu não consigo enchê-la de jeito nenhum.

“Well,” said the frog, “if you promise me to do whatever I bid you for a whole night long, I'll tell you how to fill it.”

— Bem — disse o sapo —, se você me prometer fazer tudo o que eu lhe pedir por uma noite inteira, eu te digo como enchê-la.

So the girl agreed, and then the frog said:

Então a menina concordou, e então o sapo disse:

“Stop it with moss and daub it with clay, And then it will carry the water away;”

"Tampe-a com musgo e revista-a com barro, E então ela vai carregar a água para longe;"

and then it gave a hop, skip and jump, and went flop into the Well of the World's End.

e então deu um pulo, um saltinho e um salto, e caiu, flop, dentro do Poço do Fim do Mundo.

So the girl looked about for some moss, and lined the bottom of the sieve with it, and over that she put some clay, and then she dipped it once again into the Well of the World's End; and this time, the water didn't run out, and she turned to go away.

Então a menina procurou por musgo, e forrou o fundo da peneira com ele, e por cima disso colocou um pouco de barro, e então a mergulhou mais uma vez no Poço do Fim do Mundo; e dessa vez a água não escorreu, e ela se virou para ir embora.

Just then the frog popped up its head out of the Well of the World's End, and said: “Remember your promise.”

Bem nessa hora o sapo botou a cabeça para fora do Poço do Fim do Mundo, e disse: — Lembre-se da sua promessa.

“All right,” said the girl; for thought she, “what harm can a frog do me?”

— Está bem — disse a menina; pois pensou: "que mal um sapo pode me fazer?"

So she went back to her stepmother, and brought the sieve full of water from the Well of the World's End. The stepmother was fine and angry, but she said nothing at all.

Então ela voltou para sua madrasta, e trouxe a peneira cheia de água do Poço do Fim do Mundo. A madrasta ficou muito zangada, mas não disse absolutamente nada.

That very evening they heard something tap tapping at the door low down, and a voice cried out:

Naquela mesma noite ouviram algo batendo, toc-toc, na porta, bem baixinho, e uma voz gritou:

“Open the door, my hinny, my heart, Open the door, my own darling; Mind you the words that you and I spoke, Down in the meadow, at the World's End Well.”

"Abra a porta, meu bem, meu coração, Abra a porta, minha própria querida; Lembre-se das palavras que você e eu falamos, Lá embaixo no prado, no Poço do Fim do Mundo."

“Whatever can that be?” cried out the stepmother, and the girl had to tell her all about it, and what she had promised the frog.

— O que pode ser isso? — gritou a madrasta, e a menina teve que lhe contar tudo, e o que tinha prometido ao sapo.

“Girls must keep their promises,” said the stepmother. “Go and open the door this instant.” For she was glad the girl would have to obey a nasty frog.

— Meninas devem cumprir suas promessas — disse a madrasta. — Vá abrir a porta agora mesmo. — Pois ela estava contente que a menina teria que obedecer a um sapo nojento.

So the girl went and opened the door, and there was the frog from the Well of the World's End. And it hopped, and it skipped, and it jumped, till it reached the girl, and then it said:

Então a menina foi e abriu a porta, e lá estava o sapo do Poço do Fim do Mundo. E ele pulou, e saltitou, e saltou, até chegar perto da menina, e então disse:

“Lift me to your knee, my hinny, my heart; Lift me to your knee, my own darling; Remember the words you and I spoke, Down in the meadow by the World's End Well.”

"Levante-me até seu colo, meu bem, meu coração; Levante-me até seu colo, minha própria querida; Lembre-se das palavras que você e eu falamos, Lá embaixo no prado junto ao Poço do Fim do Mundo."

But the girl didn't like to, till her stepmother said “Lift it up this instant, you hussy! Girls must keep their promises!”

Mas a menina não gostou da ideia, até que sua madrasta disse: — Levante-o agora mesmo, sua atrevida! Meninas devem cumprir suas promessas!

So at last she lifted the frog up on to her lap, and it lay there for a time, till at last it said:

Então por fim ela levantou o sapo até o colo, e ele ficou ali deitado por um tempo, até que por fim disse:

“Give me some supper, my hinny, my heart, Give me some supper, my darling; Remember the words you and I spake, In the meadow, by the Well of the World's End.”

"Me dê um pouco de jantar, meu bem, meu coração, Me dê um pouco de jantar, minha querida; Lembre-se das palavras que você e eu falamos, No prado, junto ao Poço do Fim do Mundo."

Well, she didn't mind doing that, so she got it a bowl of milk and bread, and fed it well. And when the frog, had finished, it said:

Bem, ela não se importou de fazer isso, então lhe trouxe uma tigela de leite e pão, e o alimentou bem. E quando o sapo terminou, disse:

“Go with me to bed, my hinny, my heart, Go with me to bed, my own darling; Mind you the words you spake to me, Down by the cold well, so weary.”

"Vá comigo para a cama, meu bem, meu coração, Vá comigo para a cama, minha própria querida; Lembre-se das palavras que você me falou, Lá embaixo, junto ao poço frio, tão cansada."

But that the girl wouldn't do, till her stepmother said: “Do what you promised, girl; girls must keep their promises. Do what you're bid, or out you go, you and your froggie.”

Mas isso a menina não queria fazer, até que sua madrasta disse: — Faça o que você prometeu, menina; meninas devem cumprir suas promessas. Faça o que lhe pedem, ou vá embora daqui, você e seu sapinho.

So the girl took the frog with her to bed, and kept it as far away from her as she could. Well, just as the day was beginning to break what should the frog say but:

Então a menina levou o sapo com ela para a cama, e o manteve o mais longe possível de si. Bem, bem quando o dia estava começando a raiar, o que o sapo disse senão:

“Chop off my head, my hinny, my heart, Chop off my head, my own darling; Remember the promise you made to me, Down by the cold well so weary.”

"Corte a minha cabeça, meu bem, meu coração, Corte a minha cabeça, minha própria querida; Lembre-se da promessa que você me fez, Lá embaixo, junto ao poço frio, tão cansada."

At first the girl wouldn't, for she thought of what the frog had done for her at the Well of the World's End. But when the frog said the words over again, she went and took an axe and chopped off its head, and lo! and behold, there stood before her a handsome young prince, who told her that he had been enchanted by a wicked magician, and he could never be unspelled till some girl would do his bidding for a whole night, and chop off his head at the end of it.

A princípio a menina não quis, pois pensou no que o sapo tinha feito por ela no Poço do Fim do Mundo. Mas quando o sapo repetiu as palavras de novo, ela foi e pegou um machado e cortou sua cabeça, e eis que, diante dela, apareceu um belo jovem príncipe, que lhe contou que tinha sido enfeitiçado por um mago malvado, e nunca poderia se desencantar até que alguma menina fizesse tudo o que ele pedisse por uma noite inteira, e cortasse sua cabeça ao fim dela.

The stepmother was that surprised when she found the young prince instead of the nasty frog, and she wasn't best pleased, you may be sure, when the prince told her that he was going to marry her stepdaughter because she had unspelled him. So they were married and went away to live in the castle of the king, his father, and all the stepmother had to console her was, that it was all through her that her stepdaughter was married to a prince.

A madrasta ficou tão surpresa quando encontrou o jovem príncipe em vez do sapo nojento, e não ficou nada satisfeita, pode ter certeza, quando o príncipe lhe disse que ia se casar com sua enteada porque ela o tinha desencantado. Então eles se casaram e foram viver no castelo do rei, seu pai, e tudo o que restou à madrasta para se consolar foi que tinha sido tudo graças a ela que sua enteada se casara com um príncipe.
